The Gong Show

Numbers14:27-28 – “I have heard the murmurings of the children ofIsrael, which they murmur against Me…as you have spoken in My ears, so will I do to you.”
In the early 70’s there was a popular television show called “The Gong Show”, where contestants would perform in song or dance or any crazy talent in front of judges. For those contestants who were really annoying, the judges would take a giant mallet and hit it against a giant gong, the performance would cease, and the audience would be put out of their misery!
In Numbers 14:27-28, God speaks of hearing the “murmuring” of the children of Israel, which translated from the Hebrew is the English word “gong”, which means to murmur, complain or speak critically. It’s a conversation or a word spoken in a low tone, sometimes in a whisper or under your breath. The children of Israel would complain about everything, even the manna God provided for them in the wilderness. They even talked of going back toEgypt, the place of bondage that God delivered them from. The sad fact was that in verse 28 God finally said “as you have spoken in My ears, so will I do to you”. God hears everything! Even when they said in verse 2, “I wish that we would have died inEgypt” and “would God we had died in this wilderness?” Which is exactly what happened, they were hung by their tongue.
How about you, are you a complainer, are you saying some things about your life or situations that are negative, are you saying negative things under your breath when faced with a challenging situation, are you having your very own “Gong Show”? Here are a few things to remember…
- It starts in your heart, go to the root, David said “create in me a clean heart”.
- Your attitude determines your altitude, David also said “renew a right attitude inside me”.
- Learn to cancel negative statements, check yourself and reverse negative mindsets as soon as you recognize them.
It’s time to get off “The Gong Show”!
